As of the Office 365 for Mac September 2018 update, macOS 10.12 or later is required to update to the new version of the Office client apps for Mac and receive new feature updates. Users who do not update to macOS 10.12 or later before the September update will still receive mainstream support and will be able to continue using their current version of Office 365 for Mac.

As part of the upcoming September 2018 update, Office 365 for Mac users on macOS 10.12 or later will receive an update from the Office 2016 for Mac client to Office 2019 for Mac in order to maintain access to new feature releases and updates. Office 365 customers remaining on older macOS versions with Office 2016 for Mac will receive mainstream support, but not new Office 365 features.

What do I need to do to prepare for this change? To continue receiving the most up-to-date Office 365 features on Mac starting from this September 2018 update, Office 365 users will need to be running the and move to macOS 10.12 or later so they can update from the Office 2016 for Mac client to Office 2019 for Mac. These directions describe how to install the latest version of Microsoft Office 2016 on a Mac. The current version of Microsoft Office 2016 for the Mac is Version 15.x. Please note that the minimum requirements are that your computer is running MacOS 10.10 or above and contains at least 4GB of RAM. Important Notes before you begin the Upgrade:. Plug your computer into a power supply before beginning the installation to prevent your computer from going to sleep. If you do not utilize a backup service please make a copy of your Microsoft Office 2011 application folder and place it in location other than the applications folder. Please save your work and close all open Microsoft applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Project, Publisher, InfoPath, and Visio). Open ‘Spotlight’ by pressing the ‘COMMAND’ and ‘SPACEBAR’ keys at the same time. Type ‘Self Service’ in the search box (Figure 1, A).
