I can't remember exactly, but I do believe AutoCAD 2012 was the culprit, but I believe it was with Mavericks when that first came out. I had to upgrade to AutoCAD 2014 at the time to fix the problems, which were frequent crashes and hanging (while pegging the processor at 100%). It sounds like you're still running Leopard or an early version of Snow Leopard? Wow, that's old!

I'm surprised you haven't had any other software problems with something that old. Since it's not working anyway, you have nothing to lose. I think your best bet is to upgrade OSX, and try it. Worst thing that can happen is it's not stable (save often!). IIRC, opening large files and hatching were two of the things that caused mine to crash and lock up. If you have problems, you can always bite the bullet and buy a new version of AutoCAD. Edit: Just found this link: Basically, they are saying that AutoCAD 2015 is the only one guaranteed to work, but at the time of the post, they were set to provide patches for AutoCAD 2013 and 2014.

No mention of 2012, because it was 3 revisions back at that point, and they don't bother making patches for software that old. So basically my point up above still stands - it might work, but it might not. Right now, you can't even install it, so you have nothing to lose, assuming upgrading OSX doesn't break anything else you're running.
